How do I create a topic in the Instructure Community?

Creating a topic is a great way to introduce new thoughts to the community and generate conversations.

Topics are similar to discussions in the previous version of the Instructure Community.

Note: The topic feature may not be enabled in certain areas of the community.

Open Group

Topics are created within community groups.

To open a group, click the Interest Groups drop-down menu [1]. Then select the name of the group [2].

To view all groups, click the View All Groups link [3].

Join Group

In order to create a topic in a group, you must first join the group. To join a group, click the Join Group Hub button.

Create Topic

Click the Start a topic button.

Enter Topic Subject

Enter the name of your topic in the Subject field [1]. The Community will display a list of related links [2]. If you would rather view a related topic than create your own, click the topic link.

Add Topic Details

Enter the text for your question in the Body field [1]. You can use the Rich Content Editor icons to format your text [2].

To add a file to your question, click the Attach icon [3].

To receive email notifications for question replies, click the Email me when someone replies checkbox [4].

You can also enter labels in the Labels field [5] and tags in the Message Tags field [6]. Labels can be selected from a list of predefined terms that cannot be changed. Tags can include any terms that are selected by the user who creates the question.

To post your question, click the Post button [7].
